Computer Simulation of Language Acquisition: a Proposal concerning Early Language Learning in a Micro-world
نویسنده
چکیده
The goal of this work is to investigate the acquisition of particular elementary linguistic functions in a simulation environment. The linguistic functions are denotation of objects and spatial relations. They are placed in the context of simulated action. A simulated micro-world, as it is known from research in situated action and learning (e.g. robotics), is supplemented by linguistic explanations of a 'teacher'. The agent has the (simulated) capability of visual perception in a eld of attention, of manipulation with physical objects, and of generating utterances, which relate to perception and action of the agent itself. The development of the latter capability is the subject of the learning approaches. The agent's utterances correspond by content to the explanations of the teacher. The goal of learning is to attribute certain nouns (e.g. vase, ball, pen, corner, window, center, oor) to objects or places, and prepositions (in, at, between) to spatial relations between them and to correctly generate descriptions of actions or scenes. The acquisition of denotations must be realized by a learning method which is based on association, classiication and generalization. Particular attention is placed on the emergence of a semantic representation as a mediating level between cognitive and linguistic structures. The progression of language acquisition, the necessary input by the 'teacher', the types of mistakes and incomplete productions are com-1 pared to data from child language acquisition which have been made available by the CHILDES project. This is a work of basic research, which investigates the relation of linguistic expression and cognitive representation in its origination by the instrument of a computer-simulated model.

Iranian EFL Learners’ Perception of the Efficacy and Affordance of Activity Theory-based Computer Assisted Language Learning in Writing Achievement
Second language writing instruction has been greatly influenced by the growing importance of technology and the recent shift of paradigm from a cognitive to a social orientation in second language acquisition (Lantolf & Thorne, 2006). Therefore, the applications of computer assisted language learning and activity theory have been suggested as a promising framework for writing studies. The prese...

This review surveys research on second language vocabulary teaching and learning since1999. It first considers the distinction between incidental and intentional vocabulary learning.Although learners certainly acquire word knowledge incidentally while engaged in variouslanguage learning activities, more direct and systematic study of vocabulary is also required. There is a discussion of how word...
